Tuscany Dolphin Project
stenella striata (Stenella coeruleoalba)

The waters of Tuscany are made up of a complex combination of marine ecosystems which are remarkably distinctive both naturalistically and scientifically. Moreover, they represent an area of significant interest in terms of the study of cetaceans, due to the presence of resident groups and as a migratory route. Based on the latest studies, eight of the eleven species present in the Mediterranean are present in Tuscan waters: stripped dolphin (Stenella coeruleoalba), common dolphin (Delphinus delphis), bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus), risso’s dolphin (Grampus griseus), pilot whale (Globicephala melas), Cuvier's Beaked Whale (Ziphius cavirostris), spermwhale (Physeter macrocephalus) e finwhale (Balaenoptera physalus). The species that are most commonly seen are the bottle-nosed and the striped dolphin. The sea of the Tuscan Archipelago is under the protection of the National Park and is part of the Pelagos International Sanctuary for Cetaceans. These waters constitute a complex combination of coastal and deep-sea marine ecosystems, which are extremely interesting from a naturalistic point of view.

Tuscany Dolphin Project Research!

volontatio in avvistamento
Participants leave every day to sail, according to the project and weather conditions. Their duties onboard consist in helping researchers monitoring dolphins. Dolphin behaviour is recorded together with geographic position, group size, group composition, group formation, surface activity patterns and duration of surfacing intervals. Behavioural sampling is coupled with acoustic recording of dolphin vocalisations, in order to relate the sounds produced by the animals to different behavioural activities. Navigation data are collected in order to estimate dolphins relative sighting frequencies.

volontatio al timone
Seamanship: interested volunteers can learn the main riggings to sail as steering, hoisting and striking the sails, take confidence with sheets, halyard, compass and courses... furthermore they can collaborate with the crew during the mooring

imbarcazione ALBA
Accomodation: You will live on board of Alba, a 16 m sloop. It was designed for open-sea cruising (with a fully layered hull) and is comfortable, convenient, very safe and extremely livable. The bridge is completely covered in teak and there’s plenty of space for guests. Besides the two large cockpits in the stern, there’s a spacious gangway which makes it easy to get back up from the sea.
